Le jeudi 9 novembre 2017, Le Ministère de la Santé publique et de la population (MSPP) avait procédé à la relance du Service d'hygiène public.

Absente depuis plusieurs années, cette institution revient sous la désignation de Direction de la promotion de la santé et de protection de l'environnement (DPSPE). Ladite institution est maintenant chargée de conduire les actions, les interventions liées à l'hygiène et à l'assainissement.

Le Service d'hygiène public porté par les officiers sanitaires a connu une rupture au cours des années 80. Cette institution avait pour mission de contrôler et détecter les causes d'insalubrité pouvant influencer la santé animale et humaine et d'y apporter une réponse adéquate. Sa principale fonction concernait surtout l'hygiène, de manière générale, dans la communauté.

La situation d'insalubrité qui sévit dans le pays est l'un des résultats de la disparition du service sanitaire, a expliqué la directrice générale de la DPSPE, Dr Jocelyne Pierre-Louis, dans l'historicité du service d'hygiène public. « C'est une priorité du gouvernement et également une urgence nationale », a soutenu la cheffe de la DPSPE, soulignant l'état malsain du pays et le risque sanitaire qui prévaut dans les grandes villes.
